These works by Thomas Cole were to show the cycle of civilization. American had an idea that land and resources in America were endless. Cole wanted to show that wasn't the case. These paintings are a reminder of the cycle of a civilization's growth and destruction due to greed and corruption. He also reminds us that man may overcome and defeat nature temporarily. Nature goes back to its orginal state of being with only remains and reminders of destruction remaining.
