- (CNN) - The military is investigating a "shocking and deplorable" YouTube video that seems to show a Marine throwing a puppy off a rocky cliff.
The black-and-white puppy makes a yelping sound as it flies through the air.
"That's mean, that was mean," one companion says off-camera, addressing the alleged puppy thrower by his last name. The fate of the animal is not known.
The Marine is identified on the video and in other Internet postings as a lance corporal stationed at Marine Corps Base Hawaii in Kaneohe.

"Shcking and deplorable" is the official word from the Marines. They could also mention that the Marines there were under standing orders to kill all stray dogs. From a public health perspective this could make sense as most of the dogs are starving and diseased (often feeding on human corpses) but the more significant reason for the order is because barking dogs give away positions leading to loss of life of Marines. So even though this was a stupid way to dispose of a dog it could come down to the life of a stray dog vs lives of US troops. Consider too that the meaning of this video might be that killing dogs actually goes against this Marine's personal values yet he is under orders to kill dogs. What is seen in the video is a coping mechanism that never should have been shown out of context.
